A manicure can be a small act of self-care. When it becomes the starting point for a conversation, a shared memory, or the discovery of a connection between people from different generations, it can become something much more meaningful.
That was the spirit of a recent visit from the GlamourGals Foundation to The Bristal at York Avenue, where college interns and high school volunteers spent time with residents for an afternoon of manicures, conversation, and companionship.
For GlamourGals, the mission extends well beyond beauty. The organization brings together teen volunteers and residents of local senior communities through regular visits designed to foster connection and help reduce social isolation. At The Bristal at York Avenue, that mission came to life through an afternoon that was as much about conversation as it was about manicures.
More than a Beauty Ritual
“GlamourGals is all about empowering beautiful connections by having teen leaders come and give manicures to seniors,” said Grace, a GlamourGirls intern. “It’s a great way for them to share stories and it really helps people open up. The manicures are just a starting point and then the conversations are really what makes GlamourGals special.”
That sentiment was evident throughout the visit. Residents and volutneers sat together, talked, laughed, and discovered unexpected points of connection. Some residents recognized familir towns and neighborhoods in the volunteers’ stories; others found that they knew some of the same people.
It was also a reuinion of sorts. This was GlamourGals’ second visit to York Avenue, and several residents were delighted to see volunteers they remembered from their previous visit, returning not simply as guests, but as familiar faces and friends.
For resident Susan, the afternoon delievered exactly what a meaningful intergenerational experience should. “I enjoyed the whole thing. I think my nails look beautiful. The girls were darling and the conversation was great. I got more than a manicure.”
