Learn More About Assisted Living on Long Island

Living in an assisted living community means you can continue to live independently as you would in your own home, but you’ll also experience peace of mind knowing assistance is available for you when you need it. Let’s explore some frequently asked questions to learn more about what assisted living can provide you or your loved one.

Assisted living is a type of senior housing that allows residents to maintain their independence, but provides support services to older adults who need help with a few activities of daily living, also known as ADLs.

Licensed assisted living communities are regulated by the State Department of Health. All of The Bristal Assisted Living locations, including those on Long Island, are licensed communities.

Generally, an assisted living community provides three meals a day, laundry and housekeeping services, scheduled activities and outings, apartment-style living options, assistance with ADLs, and wellness programs.

All of these services are included in the cost of living at The Bristal, including some additional safety features such as an emergency response system in every apartment and a 24-hour security surveillance system throughout the community. The Bristal also offers individual service plans that are unique to each resident and created based on specific needs.

It’s important to find out what levels of care are offered when researching senior living communities. If a resident’s needs change and they require more nursing services around the clock, it may be time to begin supplemental services to age in place or a move to skilled nursing may be necessary.

The Bristal is able to provide assistance and care to residents within the licensure granted to us by the State Department of Health. In many cases, additional services can be brought into the assisted living residence if they are not provided in-house. And if needed, all of the Long Island locations offer memory care services, a specialized program called Reflections, designed to reinforce a sense of place and purpose for residents in a private and secure setting.

Assisted living communities provide many activity and programming options to enhance life and encourage independence. Residents are free to come and go as they please and decide which activities and outings they’d like to participate in.

Here’s a sampling of activities and amenities offered at most of our Long Island locations:

  • Scheduled transportation to stores, parks, concerts, museums, and more
  • Creative arts studio
  • Cards, bingo, and billiards room
  • Fitness studio and swimming pool
  • Community cinema
  • Internet café
