The Beauty of Connection: GlamourGals Brings Generations Together at The Bristal at York Avenue

A manicure can be a small act of self-care. When it becomes the starting point for a conversation, a shared memory, or the discovery of a connection between people from different generations, it can become something much more meaningful.

That was the spirit of a recent visit from the GlamourGals Foundation to The Bristal at York Avenue, where college interns and high school volunteers spent time with residents for an afternoon of manicures, conversation, and companionship.

For GlamourGals, the mission extends well beyond beauty. The organization brings together teen volunteers and residents of local senior communities through regular visits designed to foster connection and help reduce social isolation. At The Bristal at York Avenue, that mission came to life through an afternoon that was as much about conversation as it was about manicures.

More than a Beauty Ritual

“GlamourGals is all about empowering beautiful connections by having teen leaders come and give manicures to seniors,” said Grace, a GlamourGirls intern. “It’s a great way for them to share stories and it really helps people open up. The manicures are just a starting point and then the conversations are really what makes GlamourGals special.”

That sentiment was evident throughout the visit. Residents and volutneers sat together, talked, laughed, and discovered unexpected points of connection. Some residents recognized familir towns and neighborhoods in the volunteers’ stories; others found that they knew some of the same people.

It was also a reuinion of sorts. This was GlamourGals’ second visit to York Avenue, and several residents were delighted to see volunteers they remembered from their previous visit, returning not simply as guests, but as familiar faces and friends.

For resident Susan, the afternoon delievered exactly what a meaningful intergenerational experience should. “I enjoyed the whole thing. I think my nails look beautiful. The girls were darling and the conversation was great. I got more than a manicure.”

Connection Across Generations

Intergenerational programming is an important part of life at The Bristal, offering residents opportunities to engage with people of different ages, perspectives, and experiences. These encounters can create something that is difficult to manufacture: a genuine sense of connection.

A conversation betwen a resident and a student may begin with nail polish or a shared laugh, then move naturally into stories about growing up, favorite places, family, school, or the changing character of local neighborhoods.

That organic exchange is part of what makes programs like GlamourGals so valuable. The experience is not simply about bringing younger volunteers into a senior living community. It’s about creating space for two disparate generations to discover what they have in common and what they can learn from one another.

The afternoon also offered an opportunity for the York Avenue team to bring residents and volunteers together over lunch, extending the visit beyond the manicure table and creating more time for conversation and memory-making.

A Small Gesture, A Lasting Impression

The enthusiasm did not end when the volunteers left. Peter, Resident Relations Specialist at The Bristal at York Avenue, saw the impact firsthand. “They were fabulous, walking around our community and showing their nails off to fellow residents. Everyone was obsessed with the manicures.” But the appeal of the afternoon when deeper than beautifully polished nails. Peter continued,

“Programs like GlamourGals remind us that connection can begin with something as simple as sitting together and talking. When generations have the opportunity to spend meaningful time together, everyone has something to gain. Our residents get the chance to share their experiences and perspectives, while younger visitors have an opportunity to listen, to enlighten, and to build relationships. Those moments are an important part of creating a community that feels connected to the world around it.”

At The Bristal communities, wellness encompasses far more than physical health. Social and emotional well-being are equally important, and opportunities for meaningful engagement are woven into community life. Visits like these create opportunities for residents to be seen and heard, to share their stories, and to form new relationships.

For the volunteers, they receive something equally valuable: the chance to slow down and discover a person’s story.

It is a reminder that sometimes the most meaningful connections begin with something wonderfully simple, like a conversation, a shared story, and a little bit of polish.
