Frequently Asked Questions

What is Assisted Living?
The Bristal Assisted Living

Assisted living is a type of senior living that allows residents to maintain their independence but provides support services to older adults who need help with a few activities of daily living, also known as ADLs.

Licensed assisted living communities are regulated by the State Department of Health. All of The Bristal Assisted Living locations, including those on Long Island, are licensed communities.

What Services are Provided in Assisted Living?
The Bristal Independent Living

Generally, an assisted living community provides three meals a day, laundry and housekeeping services, scheduled programs and outings, apartment-style living options, assistance with ADLs, and wellness programs.

All of these services are included in the cost of living at The Bristal, including some additional safety features such as an emergency response system in every apartment and a 24-hour security surveillance system throughout the community. The Bristal also offers individual service plans that are unique to each resident and created based on specific needs.

Can I Age in Place in Assisted Living?
The Bristal Assisted Living, Somerset, NJ

It’s important to find out what levels of care are offered when researching senior living communities. If a resident’s needs change and they require more nursing services around the clock, it may be time to begin supplemental services to age in place or a move to skilled nursing may be necessary.

The Bristal is able to provide assistance and care to residents within the licensure granted to us by the State Department of Health. In many cases, additional services can be brought into the assisted living residence if they are not provided in-house. And if needed, all of the Long Island locations offer memory care services, a specialized program called Reflections, designed to reinforce a sense of place and purpose for residents in a private and secure setting.

What Programs Can I Expect to Find in Assisted Living?

Here’s a sampling of programs and amenities offered at most of our Long Island locations:

  • Scheduled transportation to stores, parks, concerts, museums, and more

Assisted living and independent living serve different needs within senior living in Long Island, NY. Independent living is ideal for active seniors who want a maintenance-free lifestyle with amenities like housekeeping, social events, and transportation. Assisted living offers additional support with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and medication management, while still promoting independence in a residential setting.

Difference Between Assisted Living and Memory Care ?
The Bristal - Assisted Living - NY

Both assisted living and memory care are popular options for senior living in Long Island, NY, but they meet different care needs. Assisted living is best for seniors who need help with daily tasks but do not require medical supervision. Memory care is specifically designed for individuals with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia and provides a secure environment, trained staff, and structured routines to support cognitive health.
