Hospitality-Driven Futures: A Shared Vision for Senior Living with Cornell University
At The Bristal, we set the standard for vibrant senior living communities, rooted in a steadfast culture of care, robust engagement, and purposeful connection. Our operational philosophy is unwavering; every resident will find an environment of belonging, where warmth, opportunity, and support are seamlessly integrated into daily life.
Recently, our Chief Operating Officer, Amy Silva-Magalhaes, and our Corporate Director of Program Innovation and Engagement, Evan Rossi, visited the Cornell School of Hotel Administration. They delivered a keynote address titled The New Senior Living Playbook: Hospitality, Experience, and the Next Generation of Leadership.
Their presentation set a clear direction for the future of senior living, demonstrating how a strong culture of care fundamentally shapes communities where every resident is valued and included.
Bridging Academia and Industry
Amy currently serves on the board of the Cornell Institute for Healthy Futures (CIHF). Through this role, she’s helping to bridge academia and industry, driving innovation across senior housing, healthcare, and hospitality. The Bristal’s partnership with CIHF ensures that students understand how dedicating themselves to a complex and highly rewarding career can enhance the lives of seniors.
The industry is growing to depend on leaders trained in empathy, emotional intelligence, and compassionate service. To lead this change, we need the brightest minds in hospitality to join our mission, which requires a strong connection between educational institutions and the senior living industry. Inspiring students is the first step. Creating pathways comes next.
Evan exemplifies this journey at work. He holds a Master of Management in Hospitality from The Hotel School at Cornell University. His leadership role at The Bristal stands as a testament to the strong and effective pipeline between academic excellence and a meaningful career in senior living.

The Evolution of Senior Living
The senior living industry is at a major inflection point. As our population ages, the need for high-quality housing and care grows. More importantly, expectations for what comprises a rich and meaningful life are changing.
Seniors are seeking a higher quality of experience, not just longevity. They want engagement, purpose, and a sense of belonging, not just care and a passive retirement. The baseline expectations of safety, compliance, and clinical support are still essential, but they no longer define an exceptional community.
During the presentation, Amy and Evan made it clear: The Bristal is leading the industry by advancing a comprehensive person-driven approach built on hospitality and design. We’ve moved beyond traditional amenities to deliver a vibrant lifestyle model that actively shapes the resident experience and provides personalized support.
This shift is bold and transformative, replacing incremental improvements with structural change and forward-thinking leadership. To meet the changing needs of our residents, we are resolute in our commitment to set a new benchmark for what senior living must deliver.
Hospitality as a Philosophical Pillar
When called on for discussion, the Cornell students recognized our foundational values and expounded upon their real-world implications, highlighting: the delivery of personalized programs shaped by resident interests, collaboration with professionals and institutions, and the exceptional diligence with which we approach every detail.
The students affirmed what sets The Bristal apart. It is our unwavering commitment to creating environments where challenges are approached with compassion and accountability, where hospitality is not treated as an amenity.
As an operational philosophy, hospitality forms the backbone of everything we stand for at The Bristal. It directly shapes our standards, relationships, and the comfort of our residents. While many communities focus on resources, we fundamentally design environments which weave hospitality-driven healthcare into daily routine. This approach empowers residents and team members and ensures confidence in every facet of community life.

Building Pathways with The Bristal Internship Program
After their presentation, Amy and Evan had the opportunity to meet with a handful of impressive students to discuss The Bristal Internship Program and how we are building real pathways into senior living leadership.
Our internship program with Cornell centers entirely on hospitality-driven care. Designed as a leadership incubation experience, interns are immersed in operations. They gain cross-departmental experience, benefit from executive mentorship, and participate in structured development. Last summer, we proudly graduated our first three interns from this Cornell internship program. They experienced firsthand how we manage talent, ensure resident satisfaction, and integrate technology to support resident well-being.

Multidimensional Care is the Future of Senior Living
Senior living excellence is progressing past a simple care model toward one built on experience which supports physical, cognitive, emotional, social, and spiritual wellness, an approach best delivered through innovative programming and high standards for hospitality.
The Bristal will continue to drive innovation across senior housing, healthcare, and hospitality by seeking out passionate, forward-thinking professionals to help us do so. The next generation of senior living leaders will not simply manage communities; they will shape them.
