The Bristal Partners with Breakfast University to Bring World-Class Learning to Residents
At The Bristal, lifelong learning is not a buzz word — it’s a lived experience, a foundational aspect of our philosophy of senior living. Reaffirming our dedication to lifelong learning, residents gathered for the inaugural Breakfast University lecture, marking the beginning of an exciting new partnership with the platform created by Steven Schragis, founder of One Day University.
As the first senior living provider to partner with Breakfast University, The Bristal is proud to offer residents access to university-level lectures from renowned scholars and cultural institutions, thoughtfully integrated into daily life across our communities.
A Thought-Provoking Start
The partnership officially launched with a compelling lecutre by Caroline Winterer of Stanford University, who invited residents into a sweeeping exploration of history, power, and national identity, beginning with the question, Are We Rome?
Drawing on the rise of the Roman Empire, from settlements along the Tiber River to a vast network of cities spanning much of the Mediterranean world and Europe, Professor Winterer examined how, at its height, one in every five people on Earth lived within the Roman Empire. For Americans, she noted, Rome’s unlikely ascent, sweeping ambitions, and eventual decline have long served as a mirror for national self-reflection.
The lecture posed enduring questions that sparked lively conversation among residents: Is the United States an empire? Are empires inherently good or bad? What causes great civilizations to rise — and to fall? And how might America avoid Rome’s fate? The discussion explored what Rome’s story revelas about power, values, and the choices societies make over time, all framed around one timeless question.
The morning set the tone for what Breakfast University brings to The Bristal, that learning is rigorous, relevant, and deeply engaging.
Unrivaled Access to Ideas that Inspire
Through Breakfast University, residents enjoy monthly lectures led by distinguised scholars from instituations such as Stanford University, Rutgers University, Bard College, and the New York Historical Society. To support these experiences, team members of The Bristal receive specialized training designed to help spark convesration and connection, ensuring learning extends beyond the lecture itself and into everyday community life.
Learning, Connection, and Conversation
For residents like Maryann C., Professor Emeritus at the CUNY Graduate School, the partnership resonates on a deeply personal level:
“Teaching at CUNY, I cherished the connections built through sharing knowledge and stories. Having access to scholars from Breakfast University and the New York Historical Society right here at The Bristal means we can keep that spirit of learning and conversation alive.”
It’s this shared exploration, through ideas discussed over coffee, debated at lunch, and revisited in passing, that helps foster a vibrant, intellectually engaged community.
