Advanced Memory Care at The Bristal: A Person-Driven Approach to Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

When a family member or close friend receives an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis, families face difficult decisions about care. At The Bristal Assisted Living, we understand the weight of these choices and the importance of finding a community that provides not just care, but compassionate, research-backed support that honors each resident’s dignity and individuality.

Our advanced memory care programs fuse luxury senior living with cutting-edge approaches to memory support, creating an environment where residents can thrive with purpose and connection.

What Makes The Bristal’s Memory Care Approach Different?

Advanced memory care solutions require more than a secure building and basic assistance—they demand specialized expertise, evidence-based programming, and a deep commitment to seeing the person beyond the diagnosis. The Bristal has built our memory care philosophy on these principles, creating communities specifically designed to support the unique needs of individuals living with Alzheimer’s and related dementias.

Our Reflections neighborhoods provide dedicated memory care in secure, thoughtfully designed spaces that balance safety with freedom of movement. Unlike traditional locked units that can feel institutional, our environments are warm, residential, and carefully calibrated to reduce confusion while encouraging engagement and independence.

Our Foundation: A Commitment to Excellence in Care

The Bristal Assisted Living was founded on the principle that all residents deserve a safe and supportive home environment, where their care needs are met by highly trained and compassionate team members adhering to the highest standard of excellence. Using the Hands-On & Hearts-In® sensitivity program, which applies an evidence-based approach to all interactions, residents of The Bristal communities are assured empathetic service and attention, especially within our Reflections memory care neighborhoods.

Research-Backed Care That Makes a Difference

The Bristal’s commitment to advanced memory care extends beyond day-to-day support. In alignment with our mission to provide empathetic support and elevate quality of life, The Bristal is proud to participate in a research study funded by the National Institute on Aging, led by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Cecil G. Sheps Center for Health Services Research, in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association®. This study evaluated the effectiveness of dementia care training programs, essentiALZ® and Project ECHO®, within 126 assisted living locations, including select locations of The Bristal.

The essentiALZ and Project ECHO programs, developed by the Alzheimer’s Association, are innovative online training resources designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of staff in memory care settings. Covering five key areas—Alzheimer’s and dementia basics, person-driven care, assessment and care planning, activities of daily living, and communication changes and dementia-related behavior—these programs deliver practical, evidence-based insights for team members to implement daily.

As part of this research, residents and family members were randomly selected for interviews to provide feedback on training outcomes. The study aimed to determine whether these programs help staff feel better prepared and improve the quality of care for both residents and team members. By integrating research findings into our programming, we ensure that our approach evolves alongside scientific understanding.

Memory Care Training: The Foundation of Exceptional Care

The quality of memory care begins with the people delivering it. That’s why memory loss care training is central to The Bristal’s approach, ensuring that every team member working in our Reflections neighborhoods has specialized knowledge and skills.

Comprehensive Team Education

Our memory care training program equips team members with:

  • Deep understanding of dementia types and progression: Team members learn about Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia, recognizing that each presents differently and how they affect seniors over time.
  • Communication techniques for connection: Training in validation therapy, redirection strategies, and non-verbal communication helps our team engage meaningfully with residents at every stage.
  • Behavior management strategies: Rather than viewing challenging behaviors as problems, our trained team members recognize them as communication about unmet needs.
  • Person-driven care planning: Memory loss care training emphasizes learning each resident’s life story, preferences, and stressors to provide truly individualized support.
  • Crisis intervention and de-escalation: Team members learn to recognize early warning signs and intervene calmly before situations escalate.

Ongoing Professional Development

Memory loss care training doesn’t end after initial onboarding. In addition to our participation in the National Institute on Aging research study, The Bristal continues to implement our Hands-On & Hearts-In® sensitivity training—a program core to our mission that empowers team members to facilitate meaningful, supportive interactions in daily caregiving and care planning. Regular training sessions, workshops with specialists, and collaboration with healthcare partners ensure our team remains at the forefront of dementia care expertise.

At The Bristal, we believe that staying connected to the latest developments in memory care and continually refining our training outcomes are vital to fulfilling our mission of enriching seniors’ lives. Alongside our residents and families, we are dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of those living with memory loss.

Secure Environments Designed for Memory Care

Safety is paramount in memory care, but security shouldn’t come at the expense of quality of life. Reflections neighborhoods at The Bristal communities achieve this balance through thoughtful environmental design.

Thoughtful Architectural Features

Our memory care neighborhoods incorporate:

  • Secured perimeters with freedom within: Residents can move freely throughout spacious neighborhoods while remaining safely within a protected environment.
  • Visual cues and wayfinding: Color-coded areas, clear signage with pictures, and familiar landmark items help residents navigate independently.
  • Memory boxes at apartment doors: Personalized displays outside each apartment help residents identify their own homes.
  • Reduced stimulation design: Carefully controlled lighting, sound-absorbing materials, and calming color palettes reduce stressors.
  • Enclosed outdoor spaces: Secure gardens and walking paths allow residents to enjoy fresh air and nature safely.

Technology-Enhanced Safety

Advanced memory care solutions also leverage technology to enhance resident safety without compromising dignity. Systems like the Foresite health monitoring and fall detection platform use wireless sensors, discreet visual monitoring systems, and artificial intelligence to monitor resident health baselines, predict fall risks, and provide immediate alerts if assistance is needed—all without invasive cameras in private spaces.

Person-Driven Programming: Engaging Mind, Body, and Spirit

The Bristal’s advanced memory care recognizes that individuals living with dementia need more than supervision—they need engagement, purpose, and joy. Our programming is designed to meet these needs through activities tailored to each resident’s abilities, interests, and background.

Meaningful Daily Activities

Our activity programming includes:

  • Reminiscence therapy: Structured sessions using photos, music, and memorabilia from residents’ pasts help maintain long-term memories and spark conversation. At The Bristal, we use life skill kits to aid in reminiscence therapy.
  • Music and movement programs: Research shows that music and dance can improve mood, reduce agitation, and even temporarily enhance cognitive function.
  • Art and creative expression: Painting, crafts, and other artistic activities provide non-verbal outlets for expression.
  • Sensory stimulation: Activities engaging sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell can reach residents even at advanced stages.
  • Life skills and purposeful tasks: Opportunities to fold laundry, set tables, or tend plants provide familiar, meaningful engagement.

Individualized Care Plans

Residents in our Reflections neighborhoods receive a personalized care plan developed with input from the residents themselves, their family and friends, healthcare professionals, and others in their close circle of care, which is further informed by the residents’ life history and experiences. These plans address:

  • Personal care needs and assistance levels
  • Communication preferences and effective approaches
  • Known stressors for anxiety or agitation
  • Favorite activities, foods, music, and past hobbies
  • Optimal daily routines and schedules
  • Health conditions requiring monitoring

Care plans are living documents, reviewed regularly and adjusted as needs change, ensuring our approach remains responsive and appropriate.

Supporting Families Through the Journey

Advanced memory care extends beyond the resident to encompass the entire family. We recognize that families navigating dementia need education, support, and partnership.

Family Resources and Education

The Bristal communities provide:

  • Regular family education programs on dementia progression, communication strategies, and self-care.
  • Support groups connect families facing similar experiences.
  • Care conferences to discuss resident progress and care plan updates.
  • 24/7 communication access for families who want to check in or discuss concerns.
  • Guidance on difficult conversations like end-of-life planning and legal matters.

Transparent Partnership

We believe families should be partners in care. Our open-door visitation policy, regular updates, and willingness to incorporate family insights into care plans demonstrate this commitment. Families are encouraged to participate in activities, join for meals, and remain actively involved in the life of their family member or friend at The Bristal.

Measuring Success in Memory Care

At The Bristal, success in advanced memory care isn’t about preventing decline—it’s about maximizing quality of life, preserving dignity, and finding moments of connection and joy despite the challenges dementia presents.

We measure our success through:

  • Resident engagement and participation in activities
  • Reduction in behavioral symptoms requiring intervention
  • Family satisfaction and confidence in care
  • Maintenance and preservation of independent abilities
  • Creating moments of clarity, laughter, and connection

Choosing the Right Memory Care Community

Finding the right advanced memory care solutions requires careful consideration. When touring memory care communities, families should evaluate:

  • Team member qualifications and training: Ask about memory loss care training requirements and ongoing education.
  • Programming quality: Observe activities in progress—are residents engaged and team members attentive?
  • Environmental design: Does the space feel homelike while providing appropriate security?
  • Team-to-resident ratios: Adequate team members are crucial for individualized attention.
  • Philosophy of care: Does the community’s approach align with your values?

The Bristal welcomes families to tour our Reflections neighborhoods, meet our trained team, observe our programming, and ask questions about our approach to advanced memory care.

Everyone deserves memory care that honors who they are, supports their remaining abilities, and provides compassionate assistance with dignity and respect. At The Bristal, our advanced memory care solutions, specialized memory loss care training, secure environments, and person-centered approach create communities where residents with Alzheimer’s and dementia can continue living with purpose and connection.

At The Bristal, we believe that transparency is important and that language matters. We use person-first language whenever possible to honor the dignity of people living with dementia. To reach those actively searching for information, we occasionally include commonly searched terminology that is less person-driven. This choice supports accessibility and discoverability, but does not reflect our philosophy of care.
