1950’s Sock Hop in Lynbrook

Everyone had so much fun at our 1950’s theme Sock Hop Party in Lynbrook. Live entertainer Phil D’orio played our favorite 50’s hits. We couldn’t help but dance! We had refreshments, including made to order hamburgers fresh off of the flat grill. We all dressed the part and made it an amazing day. Our very own Director of Recreation, Kevin Callaghan, channeled his inner Elvis for a special performance. We all had a wonderful time.

Grandparents Day in Lynbrook 2014

Grandparents Day was great this year in Lynbrook. All of the residents invited their families to join us for an afternoon of fun. The weather was amazing, and we were able to enjoy time outdoors on the patio. The DJ set up outside, and there were games for the kids. We spent the afternoon soaking up the sun, dancing to the music and enjoying time with family.

Coney Island Pretzel Bar at the ADRC Walk

Residents and staff from The Bristal Assisted Living attended this year’s Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center Walk in Old Bethpage. The theme was “Coney Island Street Fair” so The Bristal showed their support with a booth where attendees could get fresh, hot soft pretzels. Our Coney Island Pretzel Bar was a huge hit, but most importantly, the ADRC raised funds that are so desperately needed to help in the fight against Alzheimer’s Disease. The Bristal was proud to be a part of this effort.

The Bristal Helping Hands – Supplies for Success

The Bristal Helping Hands community volunteers got together in both North Woodmere and Lynbrook to support the UJA Federation of New York. The UJA has a back-to-school initiative called Supplies for Success – a program which provides new school supplies for thousands of disadvantaged children in need. The Bristal Helping Hands volunteers shopped for the supplies, assembled them into the new backpacks, and delivered them to the UJA 5 Towns drop off center  so that they could ultimately be distributed to children in need. The Supplies for Success program is a wonderful way for The Bristal Helping Hands to give back to the community.

Lynbrook’s Fundraiser for Sunrise Day Camp

Since their recent participation in the SunriseWALKS! event, The Bristal Helping Hands community volunteers in Lynbrook decided that they would host a fundraiser for Sunrise Day Camp. The community joined together to come up with some fantastic ideas. Reflections residents spent time tie-dying tee shirts and socks, as well as making beaded necklaces and bracelets to sell. The community also put a ‘lollipop tree’ in the lobby so that any visitor in the weeks leading up to the event could donate to the cause. The day of the event, there were raffles, prize baskets, hot dogs and desserts. They also had a lemonade stand, a DJ, dancing, arts and crafts, a face painter and a balloon artist. Residents, family and friends were all invited to come by and support the cause. It truly was an incredible show of teamwork and generosity from everyone involved.

The Bristal  Helping Hands in Lynbrook are proud to report that they raised $2,079.00!

All of the money will be donated to Sunrise Day Camp. Here are some photos from the team’s impressive effort:

Seniors for Seniors Cat Program in Lynbrook

Veterinarian Dr. Susan Whittred joined us for the day to bring us some very special feline visitors. Dr. Whittred is the daughter of one of our residents, Lillian, and also runs the Patricia H. Ladew Foundation which is a no kill sanctuary for cats. The shelter, located in Oyster Bay, provides housing to homeless cats along with free sterilization and medical treatment. They then adopt the cats out to forever homes. Dr. Whittred also runs a program called the Seniors for Seniors Foundation. This program is geared toward senior citizens and senior cats. It is well known that pet owners often have lower blood pressure and fewer health problems. Just the smiles that these cats brought to us could make anyone feel better! We look forward to having Dr. Whittred bring her friends back in for another visit soon.

The Bristal Attends SunriseWALKS! at Sunrise Day Camp

The Bristal Helping Hands community volunteers proudly supported Sunrise Day Camp at this year’s SunriseWALKS! event. The Bristal provided the VIP breakfast before the walk got started. It was a warm day, but that didn’t stop anyone from coming out to support the first dedicated camp in the United States for children with cancer and their siblings. Residents, staff and their families donned their Helping Hands t-shirts and either volunteered their time, or participated in the walk. After the walk, Sunrise Day Camp provided an amazing carnival of games and treats for the children to enjoy. The Bristal team bounced around beach balls and gave them to the crowd. It was a great day, and we were glad to be a part of SunriseWALKS!
