A Year-Long Celebration

20th Anniversary Seal - The Bristal

2020 is a special year for The Bristal Assisted Living – it’s our 20th Anniversary!

We opened our very first community in East Meadow in the year 2000, and we’ve been growing ever since. We’re honored to have served Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey, and the surrounding areas for the past 20 years. To commemorate this milestone, we’re kicking off a year-long celebration of The Bristal, and showcasing the very best of what we offers to our residents each and every day. Every month, we’ll celebrate something new – from friendships and discovery, to wellness and dining – some of the many things that The Bristal prides itself on providing to the residents who choose to call our communities home.

Check out the events happening across all of our communities this year by clicking on the blog, Instagram, or Facebook posts below. Enjoy!

Anne Madsen and Carol Slavinski have worked together for over two decades. When The Bristal at Westbury extended Anne a job offer, she worked it out so that she and Carol could remain a team. The duo started in February 2002 – Anne as the Director of Recreation and Carol as the Assistant Recreation Director – where they flourished. When asked about their careers at The Bristal, they both commented that their love for the residents has been the driving force behind everything they did. When The Bristal at West Babylon opened, being that it was closer to both of their homes, they were fortunate enough to make another move together. Anne currently serves as a receptionist, and Carol continues to work in recreation – their love for working with residents remains unchanged. They count themselves lucky to have been able to work with each other for so long, and for a company they love. “The company expects a lot from its employees, but they give a lot in return,” Anne said. Clearly emotional, Carol commented, “Seeing the residents enjoy themselves is what makes it worth it.” We are truly grateful for team members like Anne and Carol, who make The Bristal so special! *Note: picture taken Feb 2020.⠀

Shaniqua Hayes had no intention of pursuing a career in assisted living or working with seniors. That changed when her daughter was born. Driven by a desire to provide the best possible life for her young family, she applied for a position at a nearby assisted living community. Eager to learn, she progressed quickly to a supervisory role before joining The Bristal at Lynbrook in 2003. After two years she accepted a position in Lynbrook’s Reflections memory care program – and she hasn’t looked back. “From my heart – I do what I love. I do it from my heart. If I can get one resident to smile that is suffering with this terrible disease, it melts my heart.” Shaniqua currently serves as the Director of Reflections at The Bristal at Lake Success. Grateful for the opportunities she has been given, she strives to serve as a mentor to her staff. She believes that friendship is critical to her team’s success. “In order to build a good team to care for our residents, you have to build friendships with your staff.” We are truly grateful for team members like Shaniqua, who make The Bristal Assisted Living so special!

To celebrate 20 Years of Creative Arts, The Bristal at North Hills participated in “Loaves of Love - The Art of Challah Baking - Let’s bake together!” with Rabbi Yaakov Reiter and family, from Chabad of Roslyn. Rabbi Yaakov discussed the history of Challah, including how it is created, and why it's separated and given on Shabbat. Traditionally, two loaves of Challah are distributed on Shabbat, so not only did residents make their own Challah, but they received homemade Challah from the Chabad of Roslyn. Learning about the history of Challah bread, and how to make it, was a unique twist on celebrating the creative arts!

Luis Vasquez currently serves as the Director of Maintenance at The Bristal at West Babylon, but he began his career at The Bristal at Lynbrook when it first opened. When asked about working for The Bristal, Luis said he appreciates the numerous opportunities he has been given to learn and grow. He is also grateful for the many relationships he has formed with residents. His commitment is obvious – whether it is changing a light bulb, or helping to hang a portrait, residents can always count on his assistance. While he recognizes that his first priority is to ensure the building is safe for residents, he definitely makes sure to have fun too. Quite the dancer, he grins and says, “The residents always want to dance with me!” We are truly grateful for team members like Luis, who make The Bristal Assisted Living so special!
