Sunrise…It’s Not Just Camp!
This is the third post out of four in a campaign covering fundraising efforts by The Bristal in support of the mission of Sunrise Day Camp. Sunrise is a camp designed to meet the emotional, social, recreational and physical needs of these children while allowing them to enjoy the comforts and safety of their own homes at night.
We, at The Bristal, are asking you to share this and other articles about Sunrise Day Camp using one – or all five – of the social media icons at the bottom of the blog. Each time you share, The Bristal will donate $1 to the camp. Share on 5 social media networks & The Bristal will donate $5!
More than just a summer camp, Sunrise is a year-round experience for children with cancer and their siblings.
Day Camp’s Year-Round Programs
Sunrise Sundays and Fundays allow the children to continue the joys of Sunrise summer fun all year long. Each month an unforgettable event is planned for both campers and staff to enjoy. It’s a wonderful reunion where they sing, play games, dance, create crafts, watch movies, take trips and so much more!
During the school year, campers from previous Sunrise summers and other eligible children are invited to attend wonderful day-long adventures on Sunrise Sundays and Sunrise Fun-days. Offered periodically throughout the year on Sundays and on select days during holiday break periods, Sunrise Year-Round Programs give children an opportunity to reunite, make new friends and have a wonderful “camp” experience through every season. There are craft and drama workshops, sports activities, interactive concerts, theatrical events and other cultural enriching programs. All programs are custom designed to meet the needs of the children, and are conducted at the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds and other accessible sites offering Sunrise exclusive use.
Each year Sunrise Sundays hosts two Family Fun Days, one in October and the other in May. They are truly magical days!
Sunrise In The Hospitals
If a child is too ill to attend Sunrise Day Camp or its Year-Round Programs, he or she will not be left behind. Should any of the campers be hospitalized for any reason at all throughout the year, the Sunshine From Sunrise team of volunteers and staff will visit them in hospitals and bring “bags of fun, happiness and laughter” right to their bedside.
For children who are in or awaiting treatment, Sunrise on Wheels brings camp to them! The magical tie dye trunk, filled to the rim with games, toys, arts and crafts and camp activities, rolls into the treatment centers, changing their very long and sometimes frightening day to a day chock-full of fun and surprises!
The Magic of Sunrise On Wheels
“I don’t want to go home. You can’t make me leave!” said an 8-year-old who just finished a day of chemotherapy, while spending his day playing games and creating crafts with Sunrise On Wheels volunteers.
How can the hospital become “fun” for a child? Sunrise On Wheels changes the hospital experience for pediatric cancer patients. For some, “Wheels” is just a minor distraction during a difficult day, but it’s a distraction, nonetheless. The sight of the Sunrise On Wheels tie-dye colored trunk and a Sunrise volunteer wearing a black shirt with a rainbow, represents fun, laughter and comfort.
Sunrise and its miraculous programs are expanding and touching the hearts of hundreds of children – whose lives have been impacted by cancer — because of the generosity of people like you. Imagine the joy and healing power that these programs offer. They make the biggest difference in the children’s lives…and you can, too!
