Sunrise In The Summer

This is the first post out of four in a campaign covering fundraising efforts by The Bristal in support of the mission of Sunrise Day Camp, the first dedicated camp in the United States for children with cancer and their siblings. It is a very special place where children can come, free of charge, and enjoy days filled with fun, friendship and adventure, returning to the comfort and safety of their own homes each night while continuing with their medical treatments.

We, at The Bristal, are asking you to share this post on all your social sites such as Facebook, Pinterest or Google+ and in return The Bristal will donate $1 per share. Together, we will raise money to help kids with cancer enjoy their childhood at Sunrise. In addition, our volunteer resident organization, The Bristal Helping Hands, is contributing at the community level, starting with participation in the Sunrise Walk-a-Thon on June 8th, 2014.

Sunrise Day Camps Mission
Sunrise Day Camp and its year-round programs are designed to meet the emotional, social, recreational and physical needs of the children while allowing them to continue their medical treatments. Both Sunrise Day Camp-Long Island and Sunrise Day Camp-Pearl River are situated on campgrounds that are owned and operated by the Henry Kaufmann Campgrounds. While each of these beautiful locations is unique unto itself, both offer lush woods, grassy hills, open meadows and private swim complexes.

New York camps transport children from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Westchester, New Jersey and Long Island. All of the camps offer swimming, sports, music, drama, and all the wonderful recreation programs that make for a terrific summer camp experience.

Sunrise In The Hospitals

Beyond the camping season, Sunrise fun continues through camp-like programs and hospital services. Sunrise Sundays and Fun-days offer children exciting activities and events on Sundays and during school holidays throughout the year. Sunrise on Wheels is an innovative program that delivers a day filled with Sunrise fun to children awaiting treatment in pediatric oncology units of participating hospitals. Each week, volunteers wheel a rainbow trunk bursting with toys, games, and activities right into many of their affiliated hospitals, and change what could have been a bleak and depressing day into a day of camp fun!

Recognizing the extraordinary financial demands that a child’s chronic illness can have on a family, Sunrise Day Camp and its Year-Round Programs are offered free of charge to all children being treated for cancer and their siblings, on a non-sectarian basis.

In 2006, Sunrise Day Camp’s inaugural year, 96 children attended camp. By year eight, that number had grown to over 800 children enrolled on 3 different campuses and continues to grow annually.

Sunrise and its miraculous programs are expanding and touching the hearts of hundreds of children whose lives have been impacted by cancer—because of the generosity of people like you. Imagine the joy and healing power that these programs offer. These programs make a big difference in children’s lives…and you can, too!
