I’d like to set up a meeting to discuss what the Bristal’s plan is to improve their emergency and disaster plan to include heat and lights in the apartments in preparation for the next power outage. My parents reside at North Woodmere but have to sleep in a chair in my den for the past week due to no heat in their apartment. This is not an acceptable disaster plan. When are you available? -Judy
I truly understand your frustration. This catastrophic storm has impacted all of us in different ways. We are a New York State licensed community and as such meet all emergency and disaster requirements set forth by the Department of Health which prohibit us from having portable heaters in any of our communities for the safety of our residents.
In anticipation of the storm we contacted all family members of North Woodmere and advised them of the evacuation. Many family members took the opportunity to take their parents home and those that remained were evacuated to one of our sister communities. All but one of our communities lost power but because we have generators residents were able to have light, heat in the common areas, working elevators and refrigeration so we could prepare hot meals for our residents. Staff worked for days to keep our residents safe while many of them were experiencing destruction of their own home.
I am sorry you are upset that your mother did not have heat in her apartment but these are circumstances beyond our control. We have offered all residents the option of gathering in a common area where heat is available. I trust that LIPA is doing all it can to restore power as quickly as possible to all affected areas. Unfortunately, these extraordinary circumstances require patience that is trying for all of us.
