Get Your Senior Citizen Physically Active

Posted by: The Bristal

Dear Maryellen,

Getting my mom to exercise at her Assisted Living community is a challenge. They have a great fitness center there, but she shows so little interest. Any ideas to help me get her up and keep her physically active? —Brenda, Floral Park, NY

Dear Brenda,

What a great question. Keeping seniors exercising is paramount to their good health; but yes, the idea of breaking a sweat at the gym is not necessarily appealing to many seniors, particularly women. But have I got news for you, Brenda. Take mom to the mall!

That’s right. In a study recently released by The … read more

Posted by: The Bristal

Dear Maryellen,

Are the units owned or rented at The Bristal? Can you still live there if your money runs out? Will social security be sufficient at that point? —Karen Bernstein

Dear Karen,

All of our communities are private pay rentals and in some cases social security is sufficient. You would need to contact the community of your choice for information on available apartments and rates. Some Bristal communities have apartments that start at $2195.00 per month. We also have Veteran programs that are available to the veteran and the spouse. Please visit https://www.thebristal.com for more information on what we … read more

Tips to Overcome Resistance with Assisted Living

Posted by: The Bristal

Dear Maryellen,

What do you find is the biggest resistance for seniors to moving into an assisted living community? —Debbie Ginsberg

Dear Debbie,

It usually is leaving their long time home. That is why we suggest that seniors come for 30 days to try it out. A trial run of sorts gives each resident the opportunity to see what Assisted Living is all about without the worry of having no place to go if for some reason they decide it is not for them. 99% of the time residents will stay or leave to sell their home and come back as … read more

Memorial Day Weekend 2011

Posted by: The Bristal

Dear Readers,

The Bristal sponsored the take-off and landing of the last flying B29 Superfortress from WW2 in honor of our Veterans at the Air Power Museum in Farmingdale on Memorial Day weekend. Their commitment to our freedom, service and sacrifice was celebrated with an afternoon air show and refreshments. The event was fun and nostalgic for The Bristal residents and almost 200 Vets in our communities and all over Long Island. See you there next Memorial Day!

Assisted Living: Administration of Medication

Posted by: The Bristal

Dear Maryellen,

My mom has diabetes and can not take her reading or administrate insulin herself. Is this a service offered? -Andrea

Dear Andrea,

If the community has a nurse which provides 7 day licensed nurse coverage, and when the resident is on a once/twice a day administration schedule for insulin, yes… we would be able to provide both diabetic testing and insulin administration. When a resident is in need of three or more times per day testing and administration, the family is referred to a home care agency to provide coverage. Good Luck and please let me know how your … read more

Exercise: The Effects on Senior Citizens

Posted by: The Bristal

Dear Maryellen,

My mom is 78. She’s generally healthy, but understandably, she’s a little frail these days. Yet, she insists on doing her exercise every day despite my concerns, including aerobics. Should I let her move around so much (although I wouldn’t call what she does very “high impact”)? Is there a downside here that I should be aware of? -Edith, Bayside, NY

Dear Edith,

Your mom’s story is fabulous to hear. One of the biggest problems facing seniors today is exactly the opposite; they don’t want to “get up and go” – unless it’s to the bathroom in between commercial … read more

Monthly Cost at Assisted Living Community

Posted by: The Bristal

Dear Maryellen,

What would be the complete monthly cost of an apartment in an assisted living community? Is The Bristal offering the apartments for rent or an outright purchase? This is for my 76 yr old mother who lives in her home in Queens. -Ellington

Dear Maryellen,
